Green Day is an American punk rock band formed in Berkeley, California in, 1987. Originally they were called Sweet Children. The band's members are Billie Joe Armstrong, the lead singer and guitarist; Mike Dirnt, the band's bassist; and Tre' Cool, who replaced former drummer Al Sobrante in 1990 before the band's second studio album Kerplunk was released. After Kerplunk , Green Day released their third studio album, Dookie in 1994 under Reprise Records, and it sailed to international success. Dookie, the following year, won a Grammy for Best Alternative Album, and was nominated for nine MTV music awards. They also made an appearance at Woodstock 94' where they started a famous mud fight and the drummer got his teeth knocked out by a security guard. Green Day released its fourth studio album Insomniac, and their fifth Nimrod in 1995 and 1997 respectively. Both were a huge success and kept Green Day at the top in the 90's. With its sixth studio album Warning released, many people were thinking Green Day had lost it's relevancy. In the summer of 2003, the band went into a studio to write and record new material for a new album, tentatively titled Cigarettes and Valentines. After completing 20 tracks, the recordings were stolen from the studio and instead of re-recording the stolen tracks, the band decided to abandon the entire project and start over. In 2004 Green Day released their seventh album, American Idiot, and incredible rock opera, which put away all doubts of Green Day's fame being cut short. Green Day did not release a new album until 2009, but secretly they created a new band under the same label, and in one night, completed an entire album under the alias The Foxboro Hot Tubs. After a few years of dormancy, Green Day came back with 21st Century Breakdown their second full-length rock opera. It was not a big success but it did sell nonetheless. Green Day released a trilogy of albums in 2012, which was one of the biggest successes of their career. Green Day has sold over 70 million records worldwide and is eligible for the Rock Hall of Fame. Green Day has been a huge influence in the punk-rock music scene and still continues to shape music as they push the envelope until it busts, and they still somehow make it work.
